The Quiet Lantern · Brindlewick

Bored of Being the Hero I Opened a Tavern

Retired Hero. Fake name. Very good stew.

The legend

Everyone knows how the Hero died.

Ten years ago you ended the Demon King's war in one night. Then you got bored, faked your death and opened a tavern in the most boring town on the frontier. Tap what the songs say.

Seven feet tall, golden-haired, and wrong about everything.

Harvest Night

Ten years ago the Hero ended the Demon King's war in a single night and died in the final battle. There are statues. There are songs. There is a play.

The play is in your common room tonight.

Harvest week has packed the Quiet Lantern to the walls: farmers three to a bench, the stew pot on its second refill, Marta swearing at the oven. A seven-foot actor in a golden wig is practising his death scene by the hearth.

The door bangs open. Four adventurers in matching gold-trimmed cloaks, Silver-rank badges polished bright.

“Sir Dorian Vance, of the Gilded Fang. We'll take the table by the fire.”

The farmers are sitting at it.

At the end of the bar, Old Fenwick lifts his cup without opening his eyes. “Cows went quiet on the east road this evening. All of them.”

Your host tonight: Tom Barley.

Ten years ago, the Dawnbreaker ended the war in one night. Nobody in this room knows they're the same person.

Also good at: ending wars in one night. Definitely not in the cellar: a talking sword, bitter about ten years in a cellar.

The only name nobody wrote in any song: Kael Ashborne.

How hard are you trying?

Ordinary threats are never a danger to you.

The danger is being seen. Pick how much of yourself to use.

Tonight's guests

The Gilded Fang want the farmers' table.

A Silver-rank party, sure their leader is the next Hero. Also in the room: the town guard and a lord who has noticed the tavern makes money.
