I Swore to Sink the Pirate Lord's Fleet

“Pay the Toll and the sea stays quiet.”

Your town refused. Varek Thorne burned it, calmly, as a lesson, and sailed on to the next port, which paid.

Saltmarrow, Toll day

You have a leaky boat. He has half the sea.

Centuries ago the sea rose and swallowed half the world. What's left is islands, drowned cities full of treasure, and beasts that get bigger the deeper you sail.

A week ago you watched your home burn from a fishing boat. You got out with twenty marks and a sloop nobody else wanted. She leaks. She lists to port. Her name is Dottie, and she's yours.

Varek Thorne doesn't hate you. He doesn't know you exist. Yet.

The deeper you sail

Five seas, five ranks

Pulse is your power, and there's one rank for each depth of sea. One rank above you is a wall. Two is untouchable. Your hull decides how deep you can go, and the beasts down there decide whether you come back.

  1. ShallowsDrowned villages, Crown patrols, small angry beasts.
  2. GreenwaterSunken cities, coral reefs, pirate ports on stilts.
  3. DropThe cliff edge of the old world. Storms with no season.
  4. BlackLeviathans, drowned capitals, his four captains.
  5. AbyssThree people have been. Nobody knows what's there.

Misfits worth sailing with

Each one joins for a reason and stays for one. Treat them badly and they leave. Try their moods: every named character has a portrait for each one.

Bestiary

Every beast drops a core

Bond with a core and you gain a gift: currents, salt, storm, frost, living light. One per person. Bond with one above your rank and it kills you. Tap a beast to provoke it.

Each one is deadly in a different way, and each one can only be turned, beaten or fooled in a different way.

“I don't hate you. That's what should frighten you.”
He remembers every sailor's name. He pays every mark he promises. Around him the sea goes heavy as lead, and ships sink without being touched.

Set sail. Sink the Toll.
